A Listed Historic Château at the Heart of an Exceptional Estate
Built during the Second Empire for a distinguished family, this remarkable listed château forms an architectural and landscaped estate of exceptional coherence, having preserved its residence, outbuildings and historic parkland in their entirety.
Inspired by the Louis XIII style, the property owes its architecture to several leading figures of the 19th century, including Henri Parent, also architect of the Jacquemart-André mansion in Paris, and Ernest Sanson. Over the course of its history, the château has welcomed a number of prominent figures, notably through its connections with Marshal Berthier, Napoleon Bonaparte’s Minister of War.
The property enjoys a particularly unspoilt setting, offering absolute peace and privacy while remaining easily accessible. It is located approximately 35 minutes from Angers, 2 minutes from a village with essential amenities, 10 minutes from a town offering a full range of shops and services, and around one hour from Nantes Atlantique Airport.
The château stands at the heart of more than 49 hectares of remarkable protected landscaped parkland, planted with centuries-old trees and prestigious species including oaks, cedars of Lebanon and the Himalayas, American walnut trees and sequoias. Gently undulating, the estate alternates between meadows, woodland and long landscaped vistas.
Preserved according to its original design and itself protected as a Historic Monument, the park was created by a renowned 19th-century French landscape designer. It features an approximately 8,000 sq m lake with its own island, a river crossed by a bridge, bridle paths, a grotto, an ice house, greenhouses and a remarkable collection of rockeries and ornamental basins awaiting restoration.
A sand horse-training track measuring approximately 1.4 km further enhances this exceptional setting and represents a particularly rare facility.
The interior architecture of the château is equally impressive, both for its generous proportions and the quality of its original decorative features. A broad flight of steps leads to the entrance hall, dominated by a spectacular suspended helical wooden staircase, one of the centrepieces of the residence.
The reception rooms have retained their remarkable period wood panelling and offer particularly generous volumes, with ceiling heights reaching 5 metres. Several salons, a dining room and spacious reception areas create an atmosphere that is both majestic and welcoming, perfectly suited to a prestigious family residence or a property designed for entertaining and representation.
The ground floor also includes the kitchens and one bedroom.
The first floor accommodates eight comfortable bedrooms and seven bathrooms. The second floor offers a further eight bedrooms, five bathrooms and additional sanitary facilities. The third floor retains nine former staff bedrooms together with various ancillary rooms.
A vast basement extends beneath the entire château. It includes the former kitchens, staff dining room, wood store, several storage rooms, a wine cellar, boiler room and laundry room.
Superb stables complete the property. They comprise 31 horse boxes and a tack room on the ground floor, while three apartments have been created on the upper floor. The estate also includes entrance lodges currently occupied by the caretakers, as well as a gardener’s lodge in need of renovation.
With its history, architecture, quality of decoration, the integrity of its historic parkland and its outstanding natural setting, this property represents a rare estate close to Angers and the Loire Valley.
